Things they forgot to teach in nursing school..

Namely, how to steer a gurney.

So, my nine readers.. picture this: your lovely author (and she is lovely… Michael told me so!) was requested tonight to take a patient from the ER (where I was working tonight @ Lankenau) to the floor where they were being admitted. I needed to take the elevator. Well, since I’m STILL trying to figure out where all of TLH’s elevators are…. I took the wrong one..

The gurney was a large one.. a fancy ER one w/ lots of steering equipment… add to that a cumbersome IV pole. Well, I get into the elevator..but only barely. I immediately realize that this is NOT the transport elevator..but it’s too late… I have wedged myself into the corner… the gurney is in the elevator at an angle.. Again, unfortunately, I’m on the WRONG side and cannot get to the panel to punch the 3rd floor. So, the door is shut to the elevator… I’m trying to figure out what to do.. so, what do I do????  I crawl under the gurney… I was hoping that there would be enough space for me to fit through.. and there was. Yippy for me.

Man… I’m paying all this money for a nursing education and I’m not learning the most basic skills… There is definitely something wrong with this picture.

Ok.. that’s it.

Good night all… it’s 12.33am in my neck of the woods.

My lunch…

So, the powers that be decided it would be a good thing to open up an Au Bon Pain in the hospital.  I have been a frequent visitor in the two weeks that it has been open.

Today, I was hoping to sit, eat lunch, and to read more of Harry Potter.  I’m almost finished and I really want to get it done so I can move on to more pressing matters… like more fractions and ratios (and Sues… I was practicing my fractions last night during CSI: New York).  Unfortunately, the conversation next to me was more interesting than even Harry’s latest adventures.

It went sorta like this:  (it was a mother and daughter.. the mother just came in by bus from another city.. maybe NYC… the daughter is in her early 20s).  Let me add…before the WAY interesting part of the conversation.. they were very nice and remarked that they wouldn’t talk about the Harry Potter book because they saw that I hadn’t finished reading it yet…

So.. after their small talk & deciding which sites to see… the daughter goes to the mom “So…did my brother have sex yet?”  She asked this just as if she was asking about the weather.  Light and airy.

The mom refused to answer (thankfully).

It just went downhill from there.  But, yea… listening to them… so much better than Harry Potter.

Cleaning my desk…

The office is closed to walk in appointments this morning.  So, since it’s quiet I’m cleaning my desk.  I can’t believe all the stuff that I’ve gathered in the last 3.5 years.  I just found the card I was sent by a student.  He was the only student to ever send me flowers.  During his appointment he commented about how much I had helped him and that he was going to send me flowers.  I said “yea.. right… sure.. you will?!?!”  Well, two days later… he actually did.  And it was nice.

POTUS is in town..

I took the back entrance into my building this morning.  As I did, I was admiring the nice Mazda6 that was parked somewhat illegally in front of the entrance.  Then I saw it had a permit…  “Secret Service”… Anyway, that reminded me that George Bush is in town for some luncheon…  Awhile ago I learned that all the city hospitals are visited by the Secret Service for those “just in case” scenarios…  They have it timed on how long it would take for the President to get here from whereever he is… how long it would take before they were taken into surgery if that was needed, etc.

That’s it.  Have a good Thursday.

Weird.

My boss is interviewing a replacement for me right now.

It’s a strange feeling.

Workplace funny…

I just met with a new student and her parent.  Everything was going great.  Then I farted.  It was a silent fart…but boy… did it smell.

Don’t you just love how our body works?

Enjoy the rest of your day.

(and…  I think I have given up hope on the White Sox this season.  It’s beyond desparate… it’s beyond repair… it’s hopeless…  I want Aaron Rowand back—no offense to Jim Thome… who I think is grand)

OK… Got to get my butt in gear…

I’ve been at the hospital “working” since 8 this morning.  I use the term “working” very, very loosly.  I have not had a page yet (but as we all know… that can change), but I do have TONS of patients to see… and I have yet to see any of them.

OK… I know, I know… I’m going…

Enjoy your Saturday.

A night at the hospital…

It’s currently 22.43 (or 10.43pm).  I’ve been here already for 6 hours.  Only another 10 to go.

So far… the night has been quiet..that being said.. I feel like I’ve starred in my very own extra special episode of ER.  There was a situation tonight that would wretch the heart of the hardest person you know.

Oh… and I did learn one cool thing a few hours ago:  I learned to make an origami frog.  It’s very cool… I gave him green eyes and named him Ted (the toad).

Enjoy your evening.

Coolness..

In both temperature and temperment…

It’s cold outside…cold enough for this Chicago girl to wear a hat (which is saying a lot..because although I own a lot of hats… I hate wearing them… it’s the hat hair thing).

Sometimes I think I’m cool… at other times… I am most definitely not. Today was not a cool day. I kicked my door. I threw my pencil cup off my desk.  It doesn’t matter why it happened.. it just shouldn’t have happened.  I shouldn’t have kicked the door because now my foot is sore. I shouldn’t have thrown my pencil cup because… well, is there really EVEN a reason to throw a pencil cup????? No. Anyway, today was not one of my finest days on earth.

I wonder what God thinks of my antics down here. Does he just shake his head and think “Oh Leslie, Oh Leslie… what are we going to do with you?”

Ok..must go now. Time for “The Office”… maybe I’ll get some life lessons from Michael Scott. He seems to know how to work in an office…don’t you agree?

My 35 minute coffee break…

So… I had coffee with the quirky boy today.  It was nice.  Really normal.  He popped into my office a little after Noon today.  I was having one of those mornings where nothing was going right.. so, he popped in at exactly the right time.

He suggested coffee… so, we ran across the street.  It was one of the best $3 cups of coffee I’ve had in a long time…

Ta-ta for now.
