Not working today..

July 29, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I had an appointment at Big Brothers, Big Sisters for an interview to volunteer. It was supposed to be at 10am-11.30am… Well, the woman called last night to remind me.. I got up this morning around 8ish and realized that I had NO IDEA where the place was that I was supposed to be driving to. I called and left her a message at 9.15 and never received a call back. I feel partially irresponsible because I should have been more on task with this… but for some reason last week I remembered her saying that I would get a follow up email with the location & what to bring in with me.. I never received that. The interview was in Chester and maybe it’s just me…but I don’t want to drive in Chester without knowing where I’m going. So… I have been waiting here for almost an hour to see if she is going to call me back..she hasn’t.

I do need to go to Target… I do need to pay my phone bill… I should eat lunch today…

Yes, my Tuesday is pretty boring one.

Ta-ta for now..

A hilarious blog that had me laughing…

If you are a fan of “Ace of Cakes” on the Food Network or even if you aren’t. Go here It’s an amazing look at cakes that have gone horribly wrong… or cakes that should have NEVER been imagined or baked in the first place.

The author’s commentary on the cakes is so funny that I’ve cried because I was laughing so hard.

That’s it for today… It’s been a pretty boring Saturday.

Things they forgot to teach in nursing school..

July 23, 2008 · 6 Comments

Namely, how to steer a gurney.

So, my nine readers.. picture this: your lovely author (and she is lovely… Michael told me so!) was requested tonight to take a patient from the ER (where I was working tonight @ Lankenau) to the floor where they were being admitted. I needed to take the elevator. Well, since I’m STILL trying to figure out where all of TLH’s elevators are…. I took the wrong one..

The gurney was a large one.. a fancy ER one w/ lots of steering equipment… add to that a cumbersome IV pole. Well, I get into the elevator..but only barely. I immediately realize that this is NOT the transport elevator..but it’s too late… I have wedged myself into the corner… the gurney is in the elevator at an angle.. Again, unfortunately, I’m on the WRONG side and cannot get to the panel to punch the 3rd floor. So, the door is shut to the elevator… I’m trying to figure out what to do.. so, what do I do????  I crawl under the gurney… I was hoping that there would be enough space for me to fit through.. and there was. Yippy for me.

Man… I’m paying all this money for a nursing education and I’m not learning the most basic skills… There is definitely something wrong with this picture.

Ok.. that’s it.

Good night all… it’s 12.33am in my neck of the woods.

My weekend and other things…

July 21, 2008 · 10 Comments

My mom is in town this weekend. She arrived last Thursday and is here until tomorrow afternoon. This past weekend we drove to Providence, RI (basically the same trip we took last year!). We stayed at a hotel in Providence and then went to Newport for the day on Saturday. It was a nice weekend. It was hotter than Hell, which means for me since I sweat like a pig (no nice glow for me… a PIG… ) I was sopping wet the minute I stepped out of the hotel lobby…

Ahh.. our hotel. I hate to say bad things about a place unless they are actually warranted..  let me tell you how disappointed I was in our hotel. We stayed at the Providence Biltmore. Supposedly the “Grand Dame” of Providence. It was built in 1922 and during it’s early years was the place to be seen.. all the East Coast elite stayed there. Well, throughout the years it fell into disrepair and then there was this little thing called a hurricane that rolled in during 1958… the couches were floating in the lobby and so forth… It closed for a brief period in the 70s for renovation and then reopened.  My take on the place is this:

1. It’s resting on it’s laurels. It is a fine, beautiful old building. But I think they get away with a lot of bad service b/c it is a beautiful old building…

2. Our check in. We arrived early…  On the hotel’s website it said that rooms would not be ready until 3pm. Well, the front desk woman said that she would call me on my cell when the room was ready.. (I think it was 1.30 on Friday) … right before we left the hotel (we were going to go across the street to that famous Providence landmark: Macy’s) she said that she DID have a room available but that it didn’t have the pull out sofa that I requested (so that my mom and I didn’t have to sleep in the same bed). I said that “no, we would wait until 3 for the room that I requested.”  Well, by 3pm..she had never called. We walked back around 3.30 and our room was ready..and guess what…  NO pull out sofa…  It was a little thing but a big thing after I had been up since 4am that morning.

At check out time, the guy said he was charging me for the upgrade… I said “Uh… no you are not” (in my best .. “I’m the customer, damn it!” voice—I actually really hate confrontations w/ staff people)…  He said we got a bigger room.. I said I wasn’t concerned about the larger room.. I was concerned that we were promised a pull out bed and there wasn’t one there after we were made to wait in the first place. I think he saw that I was mad..

2. This actually happened before #1… Valet parking… You can only valet park your car there. There is no other option. It was $24/day. So, we get there… I give my key to some kid dressed in black.. I don’t get a ticket. My mom and I leave for and as we are walking across the street I have this odd sensation that my  car was just stolen. I go back and talk to the desk clerk…  who talks to the valet guy and so on.. about 1/2 hour later my car is located..  I just want a ticket so I know that it’s been properly stored…  it took them awhile to get that idea.. Again, I told them I’ve been up since 4am.. just get me a ticket now. I didn’t blow up at them..but I sooo wanted to.

3. Internet service… Even the Comfort Inn I stayed at for business has a free business computer… This place: $5/10 minutes of Internet time. I was pretty livid. It’s 2008 people… you would think that Internet would be free now…  I guess not. (for this reason.. can’t wait to get my new phone).

4. Room quality.. Yes, the hotel was remodeled..but in many ways.. it still was a hotel from 1922. They just dressed it up w/ fancy finishes…

Ok.. enough… The trip was nice..we had a good time..but please if you are ever in Providence… DO NOT STAY AT THE PROVIDENCE BILTMORE.

That’s it for now… I’m hungry.. time for breakfast.

Before putting clothes into the dryer make sure you check to see that you have no ball point pens in your scrub pockets.

Two Headlines…

July 12, 2008 · Leave a Comment

1) Tony Snow died this morning. I remember when it was announced in March 2007 that his cancer had returned. We lost another great journalist and fellow political junkie.

2) “Shirtless Mormons Calendar Gets Man in Trouble”… Apparently, a Mormon man thought up a shirtless calendar featuring male missionaries without their shirts on. He might get excommunicated. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Weirdly enough..he is planning another calendar and has already gotten 100 former missionaries who want to be featured…

The thing about Mormonism that I will never get…  Christianity is not about rules. It’s not about not drinking alcohol or caffeine or appearing with your shirt off.

Sorry, the story just totally irked me.

That’s it for now.. I think I will go have another piece of my evil food before I head to work for a short 4 hour shift.

Trader Joes’ “Inside Out Carrot Cake”  two thick carrot cake cookies held together by this amazing cream cheese frosting…

I have had two today already…

**************

In other news… still don’t know which phone to go with… I need advice people… iPhone or Blackberry Pearl?  During the school year I do need the Internet, access to my email, texting, etc.. so, both phones would be a good choice…  but which one????

I need to leave for work in about 10 minutes.. thankfully only working for 4 hours

I wish I knew how to post pictures on wordpress… it was so much easier to post when I had my blogspot account… I have been going through really old pics lately…  it’s been fun….. you would never believe that some of these pictures are actually me.

OK.. I must get going… You know… I love going to work in scrubs..  fun, fun, fun..but I hate looking like a boy… (they are not really all that feminine… yea, there are scrubs made especially for females..but still… they aren’t all that attractive).

Ta-ta for now.

The logic (??) of cell phone companies…

July 9, 2008 · Leave a Comment

In particular… T-Mobile. Don’t get me wrong.. I love T-Mobile’s service. I’ve only had two companies in all my years of being with a cell phone… Sprint (for 2 years) and all the rest with T-Mobile (I can’t believe it’s been 6 years already).

Anyway, my 3rd two year contract is expiring at the end of August. I’m looking at new phones. I’m not a good comparison shopped when it comes to technical stuff. I bought a Canon printer because Canon is a good name… I bought a Canon digital camera for the same reason (and neither has disappointed).

I have been looking at the new iPhone. I’m still not thoroughly convinced it is the way to go… I’m not hot about AT&T…

So.. I was browsing T-Mobile’s website this afternoon. I’m looking at a Blackberry Pearl (in Ruby Red if you must know).. So…here’s what I don’t get… If I buy the phone outright… it’s $99! Since I’m already a T-Mobile customer… I can “upgrade” my handset to a Blackberry Pearl for only $249 + a 2 year contract. How does this make any sense whatsoever? Am I missing something here?

Oh… heard a quote today that made me laugh….

Homer Simpson: “What? There are onions in my peas?????” Ok… you had to see the episode to think this is funny. It was twice as funny for me because I was talking to my mom and they were having peas for dinner (no.. not JUST peas).. and my dad hates peas. He would hate them more so if they had onions in them.

Nothing else tonight.

Ta-ta.
