White Sox Win..White Sox Win!!

June 29, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I broke down and subscribed to the audio of the baseball games..  It was $15.00 for the whole season and post season.. Anyway, I broke down tonight because I was bored and it was the last White Sox/Cubs game. So, for the last hour I have sat here at my desk and read a book and listened to the game. It was fun…except the whole thing of MLB.com charging to listen to the baseball games..  I remember when it was free to listen live.. oh well.. such is life.

By the way, the White Sox swept the Cubs this weekend. It was a nice payback from last weekend at Wrigley Field.

So, I guess Chicago has two good teams..  Go figure.

Nothing else totally exciting to report tonight. I have to work tomorrow morning..so, it’s off to bed.

Have a good evening.

Cleaning my room…

June 26, 2008 · 5 Comments

I’m going through a set of drawers I probably haven’t gone through in 7 years… There is a writing that I have been looking for at least 2 years that I found today in one of those drawers.. Here is the passage (one of my favorites.. EVER):

Community is like a large mosaic. Each little piece seems so insignificant. One piece is bright red, another cold blue or dull green, another warm purple, another sharp yellow, another shining gold. Some look precious, others ordinary. Some look valuable, others worthless. Some look gaudy, others delicate. As individual stones, we can do little with them except compare them and judge their beauty and value. When, however, all these little stones are brought together in one big mosaic portraying the face of Christ, who would ever question the importance of any one of them? If one of them, even the least spectacular one, is missing, the face is incomplete. Together in the one mosaic, each little stone is indispensable and makes a unique contribution to the glory of God. That’s community, a fellowship of little people who together make God visible in the world. —Henri Houwen

Gosh, I forgot how much I liked reading that.  In a perfect world, it would truly be like that..

Ok.. back to cleaning… I really have too many clothes.  And white t-shirts????? I think I have found about 25 so far..

My baseball rant…(and other things)

June 21, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Ok.. since this is my blog… let me spend a minute talking baseball and  how I HATE that Chicago will ALWAYS be a CUBS town. I hate the CUBS, loathe the CUBS, etc… I hate (***author’s note: I’m using the word “hate” here to signify a strong dislike… nothing more) how the papers always take the CUBS side. Yesterday it was a Cubs win 4-3 in the bottom of the Ninth.  The papers screamed today “Ozzie’s blunder”…  Ok.. so maybe Oz made a mistake… mistakes happen…

Who has the first friggin’ World Series trophy in almost a century?  The South Siders.

That’s all I’m saying.

(Whew…Ok..that’s over with…)

Yes, I like baseball.

In other news:

1. The night shifts are over for now. I did two in a row and I’m in awe and have a new respect for people who work overnight and who have done it for any length of time. I came home yesterday morning slept for a few hours and was up… I slept for 10 hours last night and still don’t feel fully awake.

2. Went to Baltimore yesterday to see Body Worlds II… I’m still fascinated by it all. The human body is amazing.

That’s about it… nothing more here. Enjoy your day.

Monday afternoon..

June 16, 2008 · 1 Comment

I have to work from 3-11 today. It should be interesting. It’s my first evening shift at the hospital. I get a few more $$$/hour… so, that’s a good thing.

I haven’t really done much with my day so far.. laundry, watched a Netflix, dishes, *thought* about cleaning the bathroom and then decided against it.

I hate the bathroom.

It has its purpose..but cleaning it..

yuck.

I know it’s all of my stuff.

But still.

yuck.

In other news…

I spend $8 + $6 for movie nachos to see “The Happening” yesterday afternoon. It didn’t suck. It was thoughtful and the actor’s portrayals seemed real…  I’m sorry he (M. Night) keeps getting a bad rap. Maybe some of it he does deserve…but his movie wasn’t as bad as people have reported… Oh..while at the theatre (Regal Brandywine in DE)..  I stood behind a couple who spent over $30 in movie concessions… how is that even possible????????????????? 2 large sodas, a giant bucket of popcorn, ice cream things, each got a box of candy, and of course (my personal fav)..movie nachos.  These were little people.. not dwarfs..but small people…

Ok.. got to get dressed for work.. (ie.. put on my pajamas).

The Story of the Woman who drove 150 miles for a hotdog…

June 14, 2008 · 15 Comments

Ok.. actually it was a little over 75 miles each way… Yes, that was me. I just returned from my spontaneous road trip to find the best hot dog in northeastern PA. After I last posted this morning (by the way, my upstairs neighbors are having really, really loud sex right now. People it’s too darn hot…isn’t it?), I found myself wanting a hot dog & thinking about doing a road trip..right after saying that I wasn’t going to do a road trip b/c of the cost of gas… blah, blah, blah…

So, I googled “Best Hot Dog in PA” & came up with Jimmy’s Hot Dogs in Easton, PA. I entered the address into my handy portable GPS and off I went.

About 90 minutes later… I was ordering 2 hot dogs and a Diet Coke. The man who made my hot dogs had to be about 90… later on I learned that Jimmy’s has been around for more than 50 years… The only item on the menu are the hot dogs… no fries, onion rings, sausages, etc… Just hot dogs. For $2.89 I got the hot dogs and soda.. well $2.89 + the cost of gas + the toll road… I don’t want to even estimate what it really cost me for those hot dogs.

Anyway, what was really, really intriguing about this little trip… there is no where in Jimmy’s to sit and eat… it’s strictly a take out place. So, there is a bench right outside the front door (Jimmy’s is located in a strip mall.. you blink… you’ll miss it). I sat down there to eat my lunch… on the other side of the bench were a mom and her daughter… We struck up a conversation.. I forget the mom’s name… but the daughter’s name was Emily. So, the mom and I were talking about hearts… she had a heart attack a few years ago and of course we got talking about my heart surgery… blah, blah, blah… then Emily started talking about college (she’s 12 & v.v.v precocious)… I mentioned that I rec’d my masters degree at 23. The mom gushed at my amazing intellectual abilities (no…really..she did). Then, 12 yr old Emily said this: “You’re amazing.” Of course, I disagreed because I feel like an asshole most of the time… Well, after I disagreed she said this: “You shouldn’t disagree with me…because I’m 12 and I don’t tell that many adults that I think they are amazing.”

WOW. OK Emily… I’ll shut up now.

So… my trip to a local hangout 75 miles away was pretty cool.

On the drive home I thought of J. again.. I haven’t heard anything from him since our fight in March. I really miss talking to him. Today I was thinking about why he lied to me. This has nothing to do with his girlfriends or whatever… but he lied. I don’t think he’s necessarily someone who lies all the time…but for some reason… he couldn’t tell me the truth… so he lied. I lied to him ONCE about an innocuous thing and told him two days later that I lied. UGH.

Ok.. that’s it..

ps.. the hot dogs… were very good. Steamed.. served with a long pickle wedge…no ketchup (!!!!!!)… mustard & onions. Yummmmmm…..

I’m paralyzed with a free Saturday..

June 14, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I’m sitting here trying to figure out what to do with my day. Since I thought I had to work… I didn’t even think about today’s activities…  Now that I have the whole day open… I’ve wasted a third of the day.

I actually quite scared to see “The Happening”… I’m not one to really be swayed by reviewers…but most people are saying that it’s a huge waste of time. Time magazine had a feature chronically how bad M. Night’s movies keep getting… and even though I have *liked* them all… I have to agree none will ever compare with “The Sixth Sense”…but then I’m not sure that they are supposed to..  I might have to wait a little bit before I shell out $8.50 to see this one.

But then again… I really want my movie nachos today.  Decisions, Decisions.

That’s it…. I would take a road trip to nowhere except for the price of gas doesn’t afford me to travel aimlessly on the roads (something I love to do.. I love the spontaneity of it all).

For all those who were wondering.. letter to Aunt is in the mail… that’s the one thing that I accomplished this morning in between my tears from watching all the tribute shows to Tim Russert.

Now.. really… I’m going…  Enjoy your Saturday.
